These Acadian Hermit Crabs are common in the cold New England waters in the Gulf of Maine. They typically will back off when they encounter one another. Here they have just met on this Northern white-tipped pink Coral Weed (Corallina officinalis), and their antennae are rotating wildly as they determine who is who and which one should move over.
Coral Weed (Corallina officinalis) is a plant, or red algae, as it appears. It is delicate and brittle due to the Calcium in the outer branches. The tips become very white. Coral Weed grows in the shallows to the subtidal zone. It is found from Canada to North Carolina. When it washes up onto the beach and dries, it becomes totally bleached out and very brittle.
