Add to Lightbox Downloadhe European green crab (Carcinus maenas) is a non-native species in the western North Atlantic. It has also been reported along the west coast of the USA. It has been competing with native crabs since it was first believed to arrive at Cape Cod in 1817 in a ship's hold. They have impacted New England clam populations. Their life span is several years long. This pair is about to mate. The male will hold the female with him while her shell softens, which is when they can copulate. They are common in shallow water, also called the green shore crab.
