Hard coral in Rhode Island 36©JMacCausland_.tif
Add to Lightbox DownloadNorthern Star Coral (astrangia poculata), also called hard or stony coral, lives in Rhode Island and the south coast of New England. It is shown here next to a small blood seastar, which is under an inch in length. The clump of coral is approximately 2" across. As pretty as any coral, these pale pink polyps sit well exposed on their stony cups.
