Sea Pens BCUW©JMC_002FL
Add to LightboxStanding about 18 -24" out of the sandy bottom rubble, these orange sea pens (Ptilosarcus gurneyi) are a beautiful sight to come across on a dark night dive in British Columbia, Canada. They are a colonial collection of animals taking this form. Related to coral, they are filter feeders. When disturbed, they retract into the sand. They have the grace of a lovely fern but are bright orange instead of green.
