Bay Scallops with Blue Eyes ©JMacCausland'12.

A blue-eyed Atlantic Bay Scallop (Argopecten irradians), a bi-valve, can sense light and dark motion with it's eyes which rim the mantle. The maximaum size is 3", much smaller than the Sea Scallop. They live in sandy or muddy bays. Their coloration varies greatly, with the lower shell being pale in color. They "swim" by flapping water out of their body, creating a water-jet propulsion.
