This image is a 1 : 1 ratio 35 mm, so the actual size is 1.5 inches wide. The Blue Mussel lip-like mantle is surrounded by Juvenile Frilled Anemones. You can see the incurrent and the excurrent valves which this bivalve uses to filter feed by siphoning seawater in an out. Mussels have extraordinarily strong filaments called byssus (their "beard") with which they attach themselves to solid objects. The young anemones have then fastened themselves to the mussel shell. As the get larger, the anemones can move to another spot. Blue Mussels range from Arctic to South Carolina.
