Add to LightboxThe small, discarded molt or shell of a Horseshoe crab (Limulus Polyphemus) is a delicate find on a Chatham, Cape Cod Beach. The discarded, outgrown molted shell is fragile and light. when they are young like this one, they are a pretty butterscotch color. Also called King Crab, horseshoe crabs are an Arthropod related to Arachnids such as a scorpion or spider. An ancient animal, they have copper-rich blue blood used in detecting bacterial endotoxins in humans. Once widespread in ancient seas, only a few live in the modern world. the tail, called a Telson, is harmless, used for righting itself when upside-down.
