Add to LightboxA Shorthorn Sculpin (Myoxocephalus scorpius) juvenile is well camouflaged in the North Atlantic. It may grow to a foot in length. The species is found in New England to the Arctic. It has antifreeze proteins, which allow it to survive at temperatures slightly below freezing. After spawning in late winter, the male will guard the eggs. The shorthorn sculpin, Myoxocephalus scorpius, is also called bull-rout. They eat a wide range of marine animals. Sculpins are a cold water fish, prefering temperatures below 60 degrees F. The largest specimen taken was about 3 feet, but that is unusual.
