Sea Vase tunicate_©JMacCausland.tif
Add to LightboxSensitive to my presence and my strobe, this Sea Vase Tunicate (Ciona intestinalis) has closed one siphon and partially closed its other. On the right is an encrusting tunicate Northern White Crust (Didemnum albidum). Both tunicates are competing for space. The Sea vase can reach 6" in height, but I have not seen them that large. It is a shallow water species, but subtidal. Unlike the solitary sea vase, the white crust is colonial, spreading 4 inches or more. Didemnum candidum is a species nearly identical to Didemnum albidum.
