Northern Sun Star BCUW©JMC_002JC
Add to LightboxA bright red Northern Sun Star (Solaster endeca) is feeding on a rock wall. It lives in all the cold, boreal oceans worldwide, but this one was found out of Port Hardy, Vancouver Island, Canada. Differentiating this species from some other large sea stars is its fat, chubby appearance. Some call it the Smooth Sun Star. The color may vary. It has nine arms here. Also seen in the image are some large Red Urchins and seaweed.
