Add to LightboxI photographed this Sea Scallop while diving in Salem, Massachusetts off Jeff Davis's Boat. You can see the light and motion sensing eyes along the rim of its shell opening. When it senses an enemy such as a crab or gastropod, it can flap away by jet propulsion. The harvesting of these "Deep Sea Scallops" is an important food industry in the North Atlantic. The smaller Bay Scallops, which live in shallow bays, have almost been wiped out by human harvesting.
