In New England, early summer goslings stay close and nestle on a green lawn. They primarily eat grass and grass seeds. The adults will protect them until they are fully feathered in adult plumage. Then they will fly off as a group, usually by early August, to their winter grounds. Some have learned to stay the winter, often encouraged by human feeding. However, white bread products will stunt their growth, causing deformed wings, which will lead to death by a predator.
