Add to LightboxA Bighorn Sheep buck and doe traverse the dry plains of the Badlands. The Badlands of Southwest South Dakota, was named by the Lakota people who called it "mako sica," meaning “land bad, due to its rough topography, extreme weather, lack of water. It is dry and very dusty. The nearest city is Rapid City, about 63 miles away. The Desert Bighorn subspecies is a species of concern due to hunting and habitat loss.
