River Otter DSC_4804CLC3
Add to LightboxThis River otter (Lontra Canadensis) was surprised to see me at the local Hering run in Massachusetts. Curious but shy, very skittish and fleet he and his partner quickly disappeared. River otters also venture into the ocean in search of fish. River otters also eat arthropods, mollusks and turtles . They are only one or two pounds and approximately two to three sleek feet long. Thye are noted to be playful and sociable. These otters can dive at least 60 feet down and stay under several minutes. Like other aquatic mammals, they close their ears and nostrils when the dive. According to the SeaDoc Society, humans account for nearly half their deaths, mostly roadkill, but they can live for ten to twenty years. Nearly extirpated for their thick fur, they may still be hunted in many states.
