Five to 25 feet long, the stipes of Sugar Kelp can be long (longicruris) or short (saccharina), hollow or not. The typical ruffled edges can be smooth. With finger-like holdfasts the plant attaches to rocks, mussels, or other sturdy material. It favors healthy currents. It is edible and sweet.
