Hard Coral and Red Sea Star ©JMacCausland
Add to LightboxIf you find the small stoney skeleton on the beach, they are dead, but not extinct fossils, as some think. Here is the living animal, photographed in RI, near by waters. Its the Northern Stoney Coral, a small formation as compared to the ones in the tropics, but related. Proper name is the Northern Star Coral (Astrangia poculata) to 130 feet, Cape Cod to Florida. This image is 35 mm 1:1 ratio macro. So the image is actually 1 1/2" and so appears much larger here.
