Horseshoe Crab Shed DSC_7502
Add to LightboxThis is the shed of a small Horseshoe crab (Limulus Polyphemus) found on a quiet bayside beach. Although more closely related to scorpions than other crabs, horseshoe crabs must molt to accommodate growth as do all crabs. The small, discarded molt or shell of a Horseshoe Crab (Limulus Polyphemus) is a delicate find on a Cape Cod Beach. It is transparent, with no animal inside. A Horseshoe crab is an arthropod related to Arachnid such as scorpions and the spider family. It is an ancient animal which people have threatened. They are harmless and beneficial in the medical sciences in detecting bacterial endotoxins. Refer to my DELMARVA gallery for more information and images.
