Sea Raven R ME ©JMacCausland.TIF
Add to Lightbox DownloadA large Sea Raven (Hemitripterus americanus) swims off a ledge into deeper water in northern Maine, USA. I was in about 60 feet of sea water. This photograph is unusual because it has captured a Sea Raven swimming in mid water flight. The sea raven family (Hemitripteridae) are a scorpion fish (scorpaeniform). Scorpion fish have modified scales which form spines for defense. They also have lots of fleshy growths that look like seaweed, so they are well disguised in camouflage. Their coloration is variable from yellow to orange to brown. This type lives in both the Northwest Atlantic and the North Pacific. They have large mouths, teeth and are able to eat tough crustations.
