Hermit crab in dog whelk shell, MA
Add to LightboxA Long Wrist Hermit Crab (Pagurus longicarpus) has occupied a tiny New England Dog Whelk (Nassarius trivittatus) shell it found. The dog whelk will grow to an inch, so it is quite small. This shell is very bleached out by the sun, so it was probably on the beach for a while. The Long Wrist Hermit Crab (Pagurus longicarpus) body length may reach 3/4".
