Eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) is native to eastern North America where it serves the important role of planting trees. It is a comparatively large squirrel as compared to red squirrels and others across the continent. Squirrels are primarily herbivores but are a food source for many larger mammals and birds. Grey squirrels have been introduced to many countries where they are considered a problem. They have double-jointed ankles, pivoting forward or back for tree climbing. They have been observed pretending to cache food such as nuts if they think a competitor is watching. They build nests, or dreys, of balled up twigs and leaves high up in trees.
