Turtle in Golden light JMC_6986DY
Add to LightboxThe painted turtle (Chrysemys picta) is native to the USA and is common throughout the land. It lives in slow-moving freshwater rivers and ponds. Painted Turtles are the singular species of the genus Chrysemys of the pond turtle family Emydidae. Four regional subspecies exist today. They resemble the larger, Red-bellied Cooter, which is becoming less common and threatened in parts of its range. This is a vertical image. The late day sun warms the red and yellow markings on the turtle's skin and plastron.
