Add to Lightbox DownloadA Glaucous Gull is eating a large purple sea star. He is staring at me, waiting for me to look away before compromising himself by swallowing such an oversized meal. These large gulls breed in the Arctic and are often seen in Alaska and British Columbia. The Purple Sea Star (Pisaster ochraceus) is a keystone species because it feeds on mussels and sea urchins, which can destroy a kelp forest if left unchecked. What a web of who eats whom! Eventually I looked away for a second, and the gull gulped his meal.
