Chickadee in Snowstorm JMC_2751ASC
Add to LightboxThe small, black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) is momentarily sitting on a grapevine branch during a snowstorm. It lives in mixed forests. It is a passerine bird in the tit family (Paridae). It is the state bird of Massachusetts and Maine, and the provincial bird of New Brunswick, Canada. It can lower its body temperature in the winter to conserve energy. It caches food and feeds on insects, pinecone seeds and other seeds. It closely resembles the Carolina Chickadee.
