Atlantic Rock crab (Cancer irroratus) & Green Crab (Carcinus maenas) UWNE_116a_4x5
Add to LightboxAn invasive European Green Crab (Carcinus maenas), on the left, does battle with a native Atlantic Rock crab (Cancer irroratus) in Folly Cove, Gloucester, Massachusetts. The Green Crab (Carcinus maenas) has taken over a lot of the territory once belonging to Rock and Jonah crabs in the north Atlantic. They are impacting the lobster industry in Canada by eating the young lobsters and stealing the bait. They are small enough to enter, eat bait and exit the traps. Yet Green crabs are too skinny to be of much commercial use to us.
