Least Tern with Eggs JMC_7157DYC
Add to LightboxA Least Tern is about to sit back down on her eggs, in a nest of sand, rocks and surf clam shells. The nesting shorebirds will often select a spot defined by some shells or outline their nest with shell fragments so as to been seen quickly from above. The eggshells are tan and speckled to resemble the sand. I returned to this nest after we had an unusually severe rainstorm, and the beach was washed clean of all the tern and plover nests I was monitoring. I was heartbroken. I believe climate change is causing these extreme storms.
