Add to LightboxLady Crab (Ovalipes ocellatus) have clustered speckles on the carapace, shell, and therefore are also called Calico crabs, like the patterned fabric. Traditionally they range from Cape Cod to the Gulf of Mexico, but are seen now more north of Boston. Lady Crabs, like Blue Crabs are slender and agile, with adapted flat hind leg swimmerets. They are aggressive and will attack a person’s feet. This one has risen on its legs in an attack mode. They move to deeper water in the cold months of winter.
