British Soldier Lichen DSC_9472CLC.jpg
Add to LightboxThe British Soldier lichen is a collection of the fungus Cladonia cristatella and the algae Trebouxia erici. Similar to the symbiotic relationship between Coral and Algae, the fungus holds the algae and the algae nourishes the fungus. The red coating is what prompted the name “British Soldier” after the Red Coats they sported during colonial days.
