Add to LightboxThe Atlantic Surf Clam (Spisula solidissima), is also referred to as the deep-sea clam, bar clam, hen clam, or skimmer. here is has washed ashore with some seaweed, as commonly happens in heavy wind and surf conditions. It is native to the Western North Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of St. Lawrence to North Carolina. Parts of this bivalve are edible, but not the stomach. They are harvested by hand or hydraulic clam dredges. Heavy surf can dislodge them from their homes, buried in the sand, by the hundreds. They may grow to 8" in length.
