The Daisy Brittle Star (Ophiopholis aculeate) has central disk to 3/4" with are about 4.5 times as long again. There are quite a few different Brittle Stars, and their color markings are variable. They are nocturnal, usually hiding under rocks or inside sponges. This image was made in Maine, but they range from the Arctic to Long Island and 5,000 feet deep. Typically it has 5 arms; 5-6 lateral spines. A Brittle Sea Star typically has 5 arms which can easily be broken off when handled.
