A Willet (Tringa semipalmatus), has caught a mole crab in the surf on a North Carolina beach in mid September. The bird is already in winter plumage.
The small, less than 1" mole crab, or Emerita decapod crustacean is also known as sand crab which lives in the wash zone of sandy beaches.
