Bitterns After Pairing DSC_7393DYC2_16x9
Add to Lightbox DownloadA showy male American bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus), having just consummated their relationship, quickly flees. She then sculks away. Part of a series. A male American bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus) looks very dapper in breeding plumage. Normally bitterns are subdued looking and blend into the surrounding grasses. But during the breeding season, his fluffy, white epaulets are very showy. His behavior changes as well, being less concerned with hiding and more interesting in strutting in front of the hen. The American bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus) is a wading bird in the heron family. It breeds in central USA and Canada; migrates to the south for the winter.
