Stellar Sea Lions, Victoria, BC ©JMC'09_137DY_TOPDNZ
Add to LightboxStellar Sea Lions lounge and mouth-play with each other on this rocky outcropping off Victoria, BC in the North Pacific where they live. These large pinniped marine mammals of the genus Eumetopias are next in size to the Elephant seals and walrus and are the largest of the eared seals (Otariidae). Stellar Sea Lions (Eumetopias jubatus) are on the Endangered Species list. The severe decline in the salmon population may be the cause for their decline. They were listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in 1990. Named for the naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller, they are also called the northern sea lion.
