Horseshoe Crab Compound Eye exoskeleton 0614242942a_HDR

This image shows a compound eye on an exoskeleton of a horseshow crab which has been lit from behind. It was part of a exhibition I participated in: "Horseshoe Crab: Against All Odds", to focus attention on the plight of the American Horseshoe crab (Limulus Polyphemus). They are declining greatly due to exploitation and over harvesting, after years of persecution from fishermen who once believed they ate their clams and fish. Horseshoe Crabs have several visual sensory organs on their unusual bodies, this being the most obvious.
