Lugworm 4
Add to LightboxThe lugworm, a sea animal, quickly retracts into its hole on the sandy bottom. The worms dislike my dive lights, so pictures have to be made quickly. The little piles of excrement, or cast, the worm produces as it boroughs are frequently seen on beaches and tidal flats. Also called a sandworm (Arenicola marina), it is a marine worm of the phylum Annelida. This is the yellow tail end of the worm extending beyond the typical U-shaped tunnel it makes. The middle body section is red with bristles and can barely be seen here. The head section is dark in color. Lugworms are several inches long and are often used for fish bait.
