Atlantic Torpedo Ray (Tetronarce nobiliana) front view Ray eyes_048Fl_.tif
Add to LightboxA large Torpedo Ray in Massachusetts Bay stares back at me, sure that I will not harm him for fear of an electric shock. Look at all the sensory points on its face. This Creature is closely related to Sharks. An electric Torpedo Ray, as it's relatives the sharks, has white sensors along its edge and face. The eyes are very beady and odd. The Atlantic torpedo Ray (Tetronarce nobiliana) species is in the family Torpedinidae. They range from the North Atlantic to Brazil, and are known to travel extensively. They are a bat-shaped fish, as other rays. They can shock with 220 volts of electricity, and have many rows of teeth. Being nocturnal, this one was only interested in resting in shallow water, but they go to great depths.
