Coral Weed (Corallina officinalis) is a plant, or red algae, as it appears. It is delicate and brittle due to the Calcium in the outer branches. The tips become very white. Coral Weed grows in the shallows to the subtidal zone. It is found from Canada to North Carolina. When it washes up onto the beach and dries, it becomes totally bleached out and very brittle.
This one has a sprig of Sea lettuce (Monostroma Lactuca) seaweed growing with it. Notice how transparent this one cell thick sea lettuce is.
