Add to LightboxThe painted turtle (Chrysemys picta) is native to the USA and is common throughout the land. It lives in slow-moving freshwater rivers and ponds. Painted Turtles are the singular species of the genus Chrysemys of the pond turtle family Emydidae. Four regional subspecies exist today. The late day sun warms the red and yellow markings on the turtle's skin and plastron.
