Native Carpenter Bee on Phlox JMC_6651
Add to LightboxI have some carpenter bees I am willing to share my garden with, but not my house. I read up and it is said they won't eat into painted surfaces, so I used Cabot wood stain and sealer on my porch roof and have not seen them there for years since, there are plenty of dead trees in my wood for them to coexist with me. They resemble Bumble Bees in size and form, but are dark, shiny and hairless on the abdomen. Both are beneficial insects because they are excellent pollinators. They are solitary and borough into wood to live, making a perfect round 3/8" hole entryway. There are hundreds of related species. They will choose a bee house if given the opportunity. The males cannot sting, and the females will only if threatened.
