Squirrel in Snow DSC_051
Add to LightboxA Gray Squirrel huddles in the cold snow. Eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) is native to eastern North America where it serves the important role of planting trees. It is a comparatively large squirrel as compared to red squirrels and others across the continent. Squirrels are primarily herbivores but are a food source for many larger mammals and birds. Grey squirrels have been introduced to many countries where they are considered a problem. They have double-jointed ankles, pivoting forward or back for tree climbing. They have been observed pretending to cache food such as nuts if they think a competitor is watching. They build nests, or dreys, of balled up twigs and leaves high up in trees.
