Piping Plover Arranging a Shell Nest JMC_5505DYC2.jpg
Add to LightboxPiping plover mates work hard as a team to raise their chicks, against the odds. They take turns sitting on the nest, a boring labor of love. I have seen them nodding off while sitting there. While left sitting on the nest, this Piping Plover is arranging broken shells around the nest. The nests are barely noticeable, so perhaps a few shells serve as a visual pattern as seen from the sky. Males take on incubation duties along with the females.
