Horseshoe Crab Pedipalps DSC_7374DY
Add to Lightbox
A larger female horseshoe crab has been turned over in the surf with a typically smaller male attached to her back. He holds onto the female with his Pedipalps.
Each year, half a million horseshoe crabs are harvested and bled alive to create a biomedical technology for detecting bacterial endotoxins. Survivors are callously tossed back into the sea. We don't know how many survive then, but we do know their numbers are declining.
