Green Urchin Surrounded by Red Urchins BCUW©JMC'10_086JS&H
Add to LightboxA 2" Green Sea Urchin (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) is surrounded by larger Red Urchins (Mesocentrotus franciscanus) on Staples Cut Rock dive site in the North Pacific Ocean off Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The Green Urchins are circumpolar, but I have only seen the red ones in the Pacific Ocean off the USA. Sea Urchins can be long lived and are critical in the ecosystem of the Pacific Ocean, along with the kelp they eat and the sea otters who prey on them.
