A Grey Seal cruises this Cape Cod harbor hoping for a hand-out of fish. The Grey Seal is found on both shores of the North Atlantic Ocean. Grey (British) or Gray (USA)
(Halichoerus grypus) are the larger seal in New England waters. They have experienced a comeback since the introduction of the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Grey seals reach 550-880 pounds (250-400 kg) and a length of 7.5-10 feet (2-3 m). Halichoerus grypus, is Latin for "hook-nosed", and they have a decidedly "Roman" nose in comparison to the dish face of a Harbor Seal. They are carnivores and compete with fishermen for food, but also perform the healthy culling of the gene pool which a top predator provides. They eat fish, crustations and squid.
