Late for the party? This sardine sized Capelin was one of very few still alive after the majority "Rolled in" weeks before to spawn. The capelin or caplin (Mallotus villosus), a member of the smelt family, forages in the cold arctic
waters, but migrates in schools to Norway, Greenland, and Newfoundland to spawn. In Newfoundland, they beach themselves at the tideline and roll in the gravel to spawn. The males will die after the spawning orgy, but the females can return to sea and spawn another year. They are an important fish in the food chain, eaten by Cod and Atlantic Herring. Of course People harvest them, too.
