Add to LightboxA flounder is a flat fish whose eyes have moved to the right side of the animals body during it's individual development. as juveniles, flounder swim as other fishes do, with eyes on opposite sides of the body. But as the animal grows, one eye shifts to be on the same side as the other, and the animal becomes a bottom swelling flatfish. In addition, this flounder has a special ability to change it's overall skin appearance to blend into the ground around it. this one has taken on the color and blotchiness of the coralline encrusted shells around it. Blur your eyes to see better here. Even the lighter shade of the ridge on the pink coralline has been mimicked on the flounder.
