Knobbed Whelk 088 ©JMacCausland'09
Add to LightboxThis Knobed Welk (Busycon carica) has retracted into its shell and its Operculum has closed it off to protect it from predation. They are edible. The operculum is made of a material similar to our fingernails and is stiff but flexible. This is a North Atlantic marine animal. While digging for quahogs on a dive, I found this buried into several inches of sand.
