Add to LightboxA Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) sits in winter snow. they are about 12" in length, and found throughout the USA. Its planful call sounds sad, hence their name. Some people mistake it for an owl, but it is not nocturnal. It's tapered body and delicate head are lovely to behold. The face is accented by light blue eyelids. They are ground feeders and wire sitters.
