Add to LightboxI saw this Lady Crab (Ovalipes ocellatus) at the tip of Provincetown, Cape Cod. It has an unusually fuzzy carapace, with green algae growing about an inch high. These crabs don't usually stay still long enough for such a crop, and they often burry in the sand to hide, both from predators and in order to ambush their prey. If you ever go into the water at a surf-less Cape Cod beach, and think crabs are biting you, they probably are, I've seen them do it. This little swimming arthropod is quick and aggressive. But it is only a warning, as they dart in and away. Their carapace grows to a bit over three inches in length and 2.5" wide.
