Fighting Crabs UWNE©JMacCausland_117a25R+
Add to LightboxAn invasive European Green Crab (Carcinus maenas), on the left, does battle with a native Atlantic Rock crab (Cancer irroratus) in Folly Cove, Gloucester, Massachusetts. The Green Crab (Carcinus maenas) has taken over a lot of the territory once belonging to Rock and Jonah crabs in the north Atlantic. They are impacting the lobster industry in Canada by eating the young lobsters and stealing the bait. They are small enough to enter, eat bait and exit the traps. Yet Green crabs are too skinny to be of commercial use to us. These crabs are extremely cold hardy.
