Sponge, Andros ©JanetMacCausland'09_133J.
Add to LightboxThe 140 mile barrier reef of Andros is the world's sixth longest. The reef is typically 1 –2 miles from shore so boat diving is the norm. Andros has greater botanical diversity than any other island in the Bahamas. The wall drops 6,000 feet into the abyss of the "Tongue of the Ocean". This pink Vase Sponge hangs over the drop off of the reef wall, where perhaps a sea turtle has nibbled on its edges. A flexible gorgonian coral waves in the background against the deep blue sea water.
